Kenyan Assistant Referee Aden Marwa Banned For Life Over Bribery

Kenya’s once most celebrated assistant referee has been dealt a blow by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after being exposed for bribery.

The Confederation disciplinary board on Saturday banned Kenyan referee Aden Marwa from all football activities for the rest of his life.

Marwa and ten other referees were handed different penalties of between two to 10 years while 11 were provisionally suspended as they wait to appear before the board on August 5.

“The following decisions were taken by the CAF Disciplinary board regarding the referees involved, Mr. Marwa Range, assistant referee (Kenya); life ban from all CAF related football activities,” announced CAF in a statement on Saturday.

After an expose implicated Mr. Marwa in bribery, he was as struck off the 63 assistant referees’ list for the ongoing 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

An investigative story by Ghanaian journalist Anas Aremeyaw exposed Marwa receiving a $600, an equivalent of Sh60,000 bribe.

Mr. Anas posed as a Ghanaian football official when he approached Marwa at the 2018 Africa Nations Championship in Morocco and filmed him receiving the money at a hotel room.

Marwa’s ban comes barely a year after his compatriot, Davies Omweno, was banned for three months for what the confederation termed as poor performance.
