DP Ruto's Mistake That May Cost Him Presidency - Mutahi Ngunyi

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has indicated that Deputy President William Ruto may lose his 2022 presidential ambitions if he continues pushing his own frontier instead of sticking to President Uhuru Kenyatta's game plan.

Through his weekly talk show, The 5th Estate, Mutahi opined that Ruto should stick with the incumbent and allow Uhuru to lead the succession debate.

In his view, failure to respect and remain steadfastly loyal to the incumbent is the mistake that cost NASA leader Raila Odinga the chance to ascend to the helm in 2013.

"If Raila has stuck with Kibaki after the 2002 election, he would be the President today," Mutahi noted in what he called a testimony of tragedy.

Noting that sticking to the incumbent is the ultimate test of resilience and possibly the last huddle to ascending to the presidency, the political analyst noted that the DP needs to wait.

"Every President-in-Waiting has a challenge - the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting," Mutahi noted adding that anything worth having.

"If your attitude is that of entitlement like Raila after 2002, you will lose. Uhuru wants to make you president, but you have to wait on his terms. You have no option."

While admitting that it is necessary for the DP to make preparations on his presidential bid ambitions, Mutahi has cautioned that the incumbent president has a greater say when it comes to succession politics.

"Presidents are made in boardrooms. Show me a self-made president, and I will show you the horrifying work of unskilled labour," the columnist quipped.

According to Mutahi, the DP should not "make any assumption" but instead read the signs of the times concluding that "leadership is about interest not trust".

"Politics is about is elections and actions while leadership is about the next generation and vision," Mutahi concluded telling Ruto to talk about vision and not about elections.
