CS Amina Mohammed Appoints New University Vice Chancellors

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed on Wednesday appointed new Vice Chancellors to take charge of universities in the country.

Prof Victoria Ngumi was appointed as the new VC of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

She replaces Prof Mabel Imbuga who left the institution days ago having served two 5-year terms at the university's helm.

Imbuga's successor, Ngumi, was previously the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) Administration at the same institution.

Amina also appointed Prof Romanus Otieno as the new Vice Chancellor of Meru University.

Most recently, he served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at JKUAT.

He takes over from Prof Japheth Magambo who was suspended in the wake of the killing of student leader Evans 'Kidero' Njoroge.

Njoroge had led a protest against the university administration over an increment in fees as he accused them of failing to adhere to guidelines issued by the Education Ministry.

He was shot at close range by a police officer, sparking major student protests and social media campaigns on February 27.

Constable Leaky Maina, an Administration Police officer, pleaded not guilty before Meru High Court judge Francis Gikonyo on Thursday, July 26.
