Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi MP Jailed for 4 Years

Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi will spend four years in jail should he fail to pay Ksh1 million fine for assaulting two police officers in 2017.

The MP was found guilty of assaulting two police officers in April 2017.

Chief Magistrate Evans Makori ruled that he was satisfied that Mwinyi and his supporters assaulted constables Dennis Nambisia and Agapio Ndwiga.

"Having carefully considered the evidence by the prosecution, I find the accused guilty as charged," the Chief Magistrate stated.

"It is clear the accused failed to restrain or stop his supporters from disrupting the polls, therefore, he is deemed to have participated in the fracas," he added.

Chief Magistrate Makori added that the medical report showed that the police officers were badly injured during the attack.

The legislator was arrested and detained at Port police station in 2017 for disrupting the ODM party primaries in Mombasa county.

Confirming the arrest of the MP, the area police boss Peter Omanwa stated that Mwinyi was caught in the act.

Omanwa noted that voting materials were destroyed when Mwinyi and his supporters stormed into the polling station.
