Naftali Luzuli Who Battered His Wife Over Kshs.500 Freed on Bail

Naftali Luzuli, the man who beat his wife because she hadn’t used Ksh.500 he supposedly left for her to buy food, was on Monday released on a Ksh300,000 bond.

Luzuli denied the charges when he arraigned in an Eldoret Law court.

The case that has attracted the anger of Kenyans including Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and Lawyer Donald Kipkorir prompted the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to arrest the man over the weekend.

The Directorate on Sunday confirmed: "The suspect has been arrested and is currently in lawful custody. Thank you for the information."

The woman identified as Valarie Masibo and three-months pregnant at the time of the beating narrated that her husband got home drunk and started beating her, accusing her of failing to prepare dinner despite leaving Ksh500 to purchase the meal.

Speaking about the incident the left her face badly swollen, she narrated how the man had been assaulting her but she chose to hang on.

"He came home drunk, locked the doors and started beating me with a shoe and stepping on me. I tried to protect myself but he was too strong. He started pouring cold water on me, undressed me and started beating me everywhere. He took a cooking stick and hit me everywhere," she was quoted by the Standard.

"I have known him for five months. This is the fifth time he has beaten me. I used to forgive him hoping he would change. This time he went too far and the neighbours had to intervene.

"When he saw me, he could not believe that he was the one who had inflicted such injuries. He pleaded with me to forgive him but with the suffering, I have gone through, I just want the law to take its course," she noted.

Vivian expressed that though they had known each other for a short while, they decided to stay together when they found out she was pregnant.
