Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday led a funds drive in support of the party's candidate in the Migori Senatorial By-election Ochilo Ayacko.
The by-election is scheduled to take place on October 8th with the seat having fallen vacant after Senator Ben Okello succumbed to throat cancer in June
At the event attended by among others, Siaya Senator James Orengo, leaders promised to throw the opposition party's full weight behind Ayacko who is set to battle it out with Dalmas Otieno vying on a National Liberal Party (NLP) ticket.
"The ODM fraternity is behind Hon. Ochilo Ayacko with all it's might as the Migori County Senatorial By-election draws near.
"Led by our party leader Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, we've conducted a funds drive in the spirit of comradeship," Orengo later tweeted.
Ayacko had previously claimed that his rival, Otieno was being fronted by Deputy President William Ruto to test the waters in the Nyanza region ahead of the 2022 General Election.
“What we are facing is not a battle between me and my political rivals, this is about the future of ODM in the area against Ruto.
“Raila Odinga and the entire ODM brigade will roll on them like a roller-coaster, they will be taken to the political dustbin by the end of this by-election,” he stated on a past campaign stop.
Speaking at the funds drive, Raila condemned the horrific murder of pregnant second year university student Sharon Otieno in Migori County.
A minute of silence was observed in honor of Otieno whose death was linked to Migori Governor Okoth Obado, with his aide Michael Oyamo taken into police custody.
