Former United Nations representative and Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary (PS) Ambassador Macharia Kamau has joined the growing voice of disconsent over the new police uniform.
Ambassador Kamau through his Twitter handle opined that the new uniform was overly flawed as it did not convey any authority as should be the case.
"Uniforms are designed to project authority. The (new) uniform projects no authority," the PS stated.
Responding to concerns media personality and entrepreneur Julie Gathoni Gichuru, expressed concern that it was likely that no designer was involved in coming up with the new uniform.
"They (uniforms) are actually designed, not just sewed. Yani sharahani (A sewing machine) and thread is not enough," he concluded.
The new uniforms for General Duty Police Officers were unveiled by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday as part of the drastic reforms in the national police service.
"The uniform will enhance better visibility for the officers," Uhuru stated as the uniforms were showcased at the Kenya School of Government.
The Head of State further directed Inspector General of Police Joseph Kipchirchir Boinnet to implement the changes with immediate effect and ordered Treasury to operationalize the financial provisions for the same.
Kenyans, however, took to social media soon after pointing fault in among other things the deep pockets and the less conspicous shade of blue.
The uniform saw renown activist Okiya Omtatah Okoiti take to court seeking as suspension of Uhuru's directive on the changes.
During the unveiling of the uniform, Uhuru also announced a merger between the Kenya Police Service and the Administration Police "In order to eliminate waste, duplication, and overlap of duties".
