Tycoon Madatali Chatur raised eyebrows after putting all his properties in Kenya, valued at around Sh76 Billion, on sale.
Chatur, who was close to powerful government officials in former President Daniel Arap Moi's administration, has vast interests in real estate and agriculture among other sectors.
He owns, among many other properties, Diamond Plaza in Nairobi, New Muthaiga Shopping Mall, Concord Hotel and Ngara Shopping Complex.
In addition, he has several high-end residential buildings in Nairobi and land in Malindi, Mai Mahiu, Lokichogio, Maanzoni in Machakos, Syokimau, and Mombasa.
In August, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko stormed a showroom sitting on public land in Gigiri reportedly owned by Chatur that was grabbed.
"This is a public property that was meant for a fire station. From today, we have reclaimed it back and we shall have a modern fire station built here.
"For example, Bohra Primary School’s title deed is registered under a private developer, Daniel Comboni Primary is having encroachment by neighbors all around and part of Garden Estate Primary School is registered under a private developer who has a title," he stated.
Explaining that the land had been set aside for a fire station, Sonko ordered for country fire engines to be immediately stationed at the location promising that the county would construct a modern fire station.
Chatur used to feature in delegations from the Asian community to State House during President Moi's tenure.
He was also known for philanthropy and reportedly contributed money to some of Moi's projects.
