Former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi Sues MCAs Over Her Removal

Former Nairobi assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi on Friday filed contempt of court proceedings against MCAs who disobeying a court order barring her removal from office.

Embattled, Elachi has tried to repulse persistent efforts by the county assembly members to eject her from office.

Upon voting to impeach her early in September, the ex-speaker obtained conservatory orders where she sought the court's determination on whether her impeachment was procedural.

Despite the order, the MCAs on Tuesday elected Ngara MCA Chege Mwaura to replace Speaker Elachi on a temporary basis.

The ward reps overwhelmingly voted in the member for Ngara during a heated session that was coloured with fights.

Mwaura had been serving as the Majority Chief Whip in the house before his election.

MCAs quickly pulled down the name plaque at Elachi's office soon after the vote, replacing it with one that read the Ngara member's name.

Elachi's ouster from office took shape last week when members of the Nairobi County Assembly voted for her removal citing gross misconduct and abuse of office.

"Her actions and omissions have caused embarrassment and brought the office of the speaker into disrepute, this assembly resolves to sanction," read a motion filed by Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu.

On his part, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko stated that there was nothing he could do on the Speaker's ouster adding that the MCAs acted according to the provisions of the Law.

He also added that the MCAs have the capacity to impeach him as governor concluding, "Probably I am next in line."
