Francis Atwoli Linked to Gideon Moi's 2022 Running Mate Deal After Kabarak Visit

The troops led by renowned unionists Francis Atwoli to retired President Daniel Moi's home in Kabarak elicited online debate on Wednesday with pundits reading political motive in the meeting.

The COTU Secretary General, who has over the year's played a key role in shaping the country's top seat politics, was accompanied by Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa, whose brother was arguably Kenya's most respected Vice President.

With the details of deliberations in the meeting remaining largely undisclosed, a section of leaders in Western Kenya suspect the vocal unionist was on a power negotiation and alliance drafting mission.

Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has linked the visit to dynasty politics which he says were behind the COTU boss' visit whom he has accused of claiming to control the Luhya community.

"The visit did not come by surprise and it is nothing mysterious. It is part of the narrative carried by the Moi, Jaramogi and the Kenyatta families who hope that we will have succession politics," argues Khalwale.

The Ford Kenya party leaders say the three families intend to succeed each other, handing over power from one dynasty to the other.

"We know where Atwoli seats, he was making that move with the hope that he can tell Moi that his son (Gideon) can be made president if he talked to him nicely with the illusion that he controls the Luhya community," divulged Khalwale.

Last weekend, Atwoli was joined by CS Wamalwa at a fundraiser in Kakamega where the COTU boss criticised Deputy President William Ruto's inroads to parts of Western Kenya but Wamalwa avoided playing politics.

The CS stated that he had attended the function "as a Catholic believer" giving his Sh300,000 contribution to the parish. The Kabarak visit was the second time Atwoli and Wamalwa were being spotted together in a span of one week as the community strives to position itself for a stake in the next government.

Both CS Wamalwa and Atwoli could not be reached on phone to comment on the visit that has been characteristic with leaders seeking the retired presidents 'blessings' as they eye succeeding President Kenyatta.

ODM's Raila Odinga and Hassan Joho have both visited Moi, with DP Ruto's visit facing hitches as he remains a man to beat in the next contest for the presidency.
