St. Patricks' Iten in Focus Over Unusual Preparation for KCSE Exams

One of Kenya's most famous schools, St. Patricks' High School Iten, is in focus over the unusual methods used to prepare candidates for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Candidates sitting this year's exam took part in a series of challenges to build up their mental strength, physical fitness and stamina.

Over 200 students walked a distance of around eighty kilometres over rugged terrain together.

The students proceeded to a nearby river known to be infested with crocodiles where many jumped in for a swim.

They later posed for photos as they sought to put themselves in the right frame of mind for the upcoming papers.

While St. Patricks Iten has posted impressive results in KCSE over the years, it is better known for its sports program that has produced some of the biggest names in world athletics.

Famous alumni include David Rudisha, Peter Rono and Wilson Boit Kipketer.

The 8-4-4 education system has been criticized by experts for seeking to peg the futures of students to a single exam.

The government maintains that the 2-6-6-3 system that is set to replace the current one will address this by being based on continuous assessments and tapping into various abilities students have.

This year's KCSE exam promises to feature enhanced measures to prevent cheating, with the government declaring that parents who aid illegalities in any way will also be targeted.
