Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet was asked to take responsibility for the bus crash that killed 58 people two weeks ago by MPs
Nyatike MP Tom Odege, who sits at the National Assembly Transport Committee, pressured IG Boinnet to step down since his team had failed to do enough to curb road accidents.
The Transport Committee asked Boinnet to explain why traffic police officers at the highway on which the crash occurred and Kericho County Police Commander Rose Muchuma had not been interdicted.
MPs Peris Tobiko (Kajiado East) and Vincent Kemose (West Mugirango) questioned Boinnet on why he had not resigned or taken action against the officers for acts of omission that might have led to the tragedy.
“It’s more than two weeks since the accident happened. By now the IG should have resigned or at least we should have heard that action has been taken against the police officers on duty that day,” Odege stated.
Boinnet told the committee chaired by David Pkosing (Pokot East) the bus that killed 58 people at Fort Ternan in Kericho County did not pass any police roadblock throughout its journey.
“The information we have so far is that the bus left at midnight and that when it reached Westlands, it turned back. There were no roadblocks at that time,” he stated.
About 1,967 people have died on road accidents this year which is 183 more than the number recorded at the same time last year.
Statistics by the National Transport and Safety Authority showed that about 2,905 were seriously injured, an increase of 286 more than last year.
The NTSA blamed the crashes on inadequate footbridges, crossing points and failure to observe traffic rules.
