Renee Ngamau Appointed Amnesty Kenya Board Chairperson

Former Capital FM morning show presenter Renee Ngamau was appointed Chairperson of the Amnesty Kenya board.

Amnesty is among the leading human rights organizations in the world with a presence in 150 countries.

Ngamau, a lawyer, stated that she was 'humbled' by the appointment that will put her at the forefront of various public debates and discussions, particularly with the recent spike in alleged extra-judicial killings.

"I am humbled that a room of powerful brilliant human rights defenders would invite me to their midst. Grateful to have an opportunity to serve,” she stated.

In Kenya, Amnesty primarily publishes investigative research meant to spark discussions on constitutionalism and hold leaders accountable.

In various countries, Amnesty conducts awareness campaigns, lobby missions, vigils and more to place a spotlight on various cases of injustice.

Amnesty also lobbies companies and mobilizes supporters around various campaigns.

The killings of several suspected thugs in Dandora, Nairobi over the past few weeks sparked a renewed debate on extra-judicial killings.

Six suspected gangsters were gunned down on Sunday and were claimed to have been involved in an attack on a boda-boda rider that saw the passenger, a woman, gang-raped.

"IPOA has launched Investigations into the shooting of 6 people by police in Dandora on Sunday.

IPOA is also probing the death of 3 people shot by police in Yatta last Tuesday. The law requires deaths caused by police action be investigated," a statement issued on Monday by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) read in part.
