Stolen SGR Materials Recovered In Naromoru MCA's House

On Sunday 4, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) recovered Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) material worth more than Ksh1 million from the house of the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Naromoru Ward in Nyeri County.

According to the DCI, several rolls of Geogrid found at Martin Matu Kamau's home were stolen from the Nairobi SGR Yard.

Kamau has been ordered to report to DCI Railways office on Monday, November 4 for grilling.

Geogrids are flexible meshes that are used to reinforce walls, as well as sub-bases or sub-soils below the structures.

They facilitate construction of the railway over poor quality grounds and reduce the quantity of soil that is exported from or imported to a site.

The government has in the past warned of harsh punishments for individuals who will be found guilty of sabotaging the flagship project.

This was after a section of the new line was damaged by unknown people in Mariakani.

According to the governments' directive any efforts to cripple the operations of the railway amounts to economic sabotage, a capital offence whose punishment in Kenya is hanging.

President Uhuru Kenyatta announced in May 2017 that, "Mimi ni wakwanza kukubaliana ya kwamba urais umenipea nguvu ya kuweka kidole... (I acknowledge that the presidency gives me the right to pass laws including (death row).

"Wale watapatikana wakiharibu reli, nitaweka kidole wanyongwe (I will authorize to have those nabbed vandalising the SGR to be executed)."
