Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot Threatens New Police IG Hillary Mutyambai With Impeachment

The new Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has been threatened with impeachment barely a week after he assumed office.

Speaking at a public rally on Sunday, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot faulted Mutyambai for the withdrawal of security officers who were attached to some lawmakers.

He also stated that the provision of bodyguards to MPs was not a matter of privilege but a right which is protected by the Constitution.

"Wewe Inspector General mpya wa polisi, tulikupitisha hata wiki mbili hazijaisha pale bunge (To the new Inspector General of Police, two weeks have not elapsed since we passed your name in parliament).

"I want to tell you that the office that you are holding is apolitical. You are supposed to be politically neutral and not interfere with the politics of the Republic of Kenya," he posed.

Cheruiyot asked Mutyambai to return the bodyguards who had been withdrawn from the MPs or face impeachment.

"Bodyguards to Members of Parliament is not a matter of privilege, it's a right that is guaranteed by the Constitution.

I am speaking as a member of the Parliamentary Service Commission, return the bodyguards in less than 7 days. If you don't, we will impeach you," he added.

Some of the politicians whose bodyguards were withdrawn include; Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika and MPs Kimani Ichung'wa (Kikuyu) and Alice Wahome (Kandara).
