20 Suspected Gang Members Surrender to Police in Likoni

After Likoni residents raised the alarm over killer-gangs terrorising them, 20 suspects surrendered on Wednesday to the police.

This is the second exercise to occur in April. Earlier in the month, six gang members were handed over to authorities by Haki Africa CEO Hussein Khalid

Khalid urged security officials to protect the youth who had willingly surrendered arguing that they still had rights despite engaging in criminal activities.

At the same time, Likoni Sub-county commissioner Erick Wamilevu declared that they would not relent in the effort to weed out criminal elements in the coastal city.

In December, criminal gangs spread fear among residents by turning parts of Mombasa into killing zones.

Reports indicated that Kisauni and Likoni sub-counties residents were imposed on a 7pm curfew due to rampant insecurity.

Human rights groups reported that the gangs slain at least 15 people in one month.

In one incident, Mombasa Police Commander Johnston Ipara narrated how a gang of 20 people armed with machetes and knives tried to attack police officers on patrol.

According to residents, there are over 26 gangs operating in the town, some of which are recruiting minors and women.
