Police Go After Colleague for Disappearing With Foreigner’s Passport

On Wednesday, police officers in Nairobi were ordered to trace and arrest their colleague accused of withholding a passport belonging to a foreigner, who was allegedly defrauded Ksh150 million in Kenya.

Principal Magistrate Hellen Onkwani issued the warrant after the officer, Mike Muya, attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), failed to appear in court to explain why he was holding the passport of Ryskulov Damir, a Kazakhstan citizen.

The magistrate ordered Nairobi DCI commander, Bernard Nyakwaka, to ensure the police officer was immediately arrested.

On Monday, Damir moved to court to plead for the release of his passport.

According to him, his travel documents were confiscated by detectives during the investigation into the complaint he filed, after he was allegedly duped and defrauded Ksh 150 million by two Kenyans claiming they could sell him coffee and artefacts.

The two Kenyans have since been charged in court.

In an affidavit filed at the chief magistrate’s court in Nairobi, Damir stated that he was willing to abide by any conditions the court may issue in order to secure the release of his documents.

He made it clear that as a complainant in the case, the confiscation of his passport without a court order, or any viable explanation, was unlawful, inhumane, as well as degrading.

Damir had come to conduct business before he was allegedly conned by two Kenyans who were later arrested.

The matter will be mentioned on Friday, July 19, to asses whether the officer has been arrested and the passport deposited before the court.
