Major Nairobi Roads to Remain Closed for Construction

Motorists operating in Nairobi have been advised to avoid some of the city's major roads starting Thursday, July 25 to July 28, 2019.

In a statement, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) affirmed that traffic on the busy Outer Ring Road would be disrupted during the period, while the Sarit centre roundabout would be closed for the next 21 days.

The authority went on to clarify that a diversion had been created to ensure that motorists were able to navigate around the cordoned-off area.

"This is to notify the public and users of Outer Ring Road that there will be traffic disruption near the Avenue Park Estate," an excerpt of their press release disclosed.

The installation of a footbridge was mooted as the reason behind the 4-day traffic disruption.

"We urge the public to be patient as we strive to improve our roads and ensure they are safe and efficient," a section of the KURA statement revealed.

KURA had earlier (February 2019) announced its plan to build a new exchange linking the Outer Ring Road and Thika Road, to ease the traffic at the junction between the two major highways.

More than a year after the road was upgraded and opened for use, traffic congestion worsened between Pipeline Estate and Kariobangi junction, a section interspersed with several pedestrian crossings and passenger picking spots.

Outer Ring Road serves hundreds of thousands of commuters on a daily basis.

It connects Thika Road to Airport North Road at Allsops and at former Taj Shopping Mall respectively. The road stretches well over 13 Km and was named as the most dangerous highway in 2018.
