Former Ugenya MP, Christopher Karan, was, on Wednesday, arrested by detectives over claims that he forged election petition documents.
Mombasa EACC boss Japhet Baithalu confirmed the arrest stating that the former legislator had been nabbed together with his lawyer.
Karan is accused of forging a letter he used in a petition against his opponent, David Ochieng’, who defeated him during a by-election on April 6.
The by-election was held after the court nullified Karan’s election in the 2017 general election.
During the case, Karan allegedly presented a forged hospital document showing that he was sick owing to his lateness in filing the response to the election petition.
In her ruling on whether to allow late responses, Kisumu High Court Judge Trisphisa Cherere expunged all documents presented by the lawyers representing the MP in the case.
EACC wrote to Haji on October 16, 2018, asking for approval to charge Karan with fraud.
“The MP did not file his response immediately meaning he was statutorily barred from filing a response to the petition. He, however, filed a notice of motion dated September 25, 2017 seeking to have his response to the petition,” an EACC inquiry outlined at the time.
Celebrating his victory in April, Ochieng' revealed that Deputy President William Ruto helped him beat his ODM opponent.
During his thanksgiving remarks, Ochieng’ revealed that Ruto supported his campaign which saw him trounce Karan by 4000 votes. Ochieng garnered 18,730 votes against Karan's 14,507.
"Victory at last! The people of Ugenya have spoken and they have spoken it loudly. I want to take this time to thank the people of Ugenya, Deputy President William Ruto who supported my campaign, my party MDG, and Kenyans who prayed for me during my campaign.
"I promise not to let the people of Ugenya down. Now is the time to get down to work. Many thanks," Ochieng' added.
