Wangari Maathai's Ex-Husband Dies

Former Lang'ata constituency Member of Parliament  Mwangi Mathai is dead.

Mwangi is also the Ex-husband to Nobel laureate, the late Professor Wangari Maathai.

“It is with profound sadness and humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the promotion to glory of Hon. Mwangi Mathai, former MP for Lang’ata Constituency, Nairobi. Further details will be communicated later,” read the brief but sizeable obituary on the Daily Nation on Wednesday, September 18.

Despite the announcement on a national newspaper, the obituary did not state the date of his demise or the day he would be buried.

Mwangi represented Lang’ata between 1974 and 1979 under the one-party Kanu rule.

He was married to Wangari Maathai for 10 years having wedded in 1969 and divorced in 1979.

They had three children Waweru Mathai, Wanjira Mathai and Muta Mathai during their 10-year marriage that was filled with drama especially during the divorce case.

During the divorce, Mwangi was said to have believed that Wangari was "too strong-minded for a woman" and that he was "unable to control her".

He also accused her wife of infidelity as he claimed he was cheating on him with another Member of Parliament, which in turn, was thought to cause his high blood pressure.

After a much-publicised messy divorce, Mwangi, through his lawyer, asked Wangari to drop the surname Mathai as they were no longer married and this is where the Nobel laureate added an extra 'a' to her name making it Maathai.

On Sunday, 25 September 2011, Maathai died of complications from Ovarian Cancer.
