President Uhuru Kenyatta became the subject of discussion on Saturday, October 19, after curious Kenyans noted something peculiar about his watch.
The president had just launched the Special Economic Zone in Dongo Kundu in Mombasa county when joined the team embrace women for a dance.
In the photo shared by Statehouse on Twitter, the president was spotted in a black A.Lange & Sohne Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon watch.
An online search of its value revealed that the watch cost a whooping USD 250,071.
If you convert this amount to Kenyan shillings, using the exchange rate of 1$ =Ksh103.76 then the amount comes to Ksh25,947,366.96 minus shipping charges.
According to the watchmaker's website, the Datograph Perpetual Tourbillion unites three significant complications: a flyback chronograph with a precisely jumping minute counter, a perpetual calendar with a moon-phase display and a tourbillon with a patented stop-seconds mechanism.
"The classically designed dial pairs elegance with technical functionality. All the displays of the perpetual calendar switch instantaneously and thus provide unambiguous readings at all times," the website read.
Hawk-eyed Kenyans noted that this was not the first time the president stepped out in expensive timepieces.
It is said that among the watches owned by president Kenyatta is an Arnold & Son HM Perpetual Moon which costs an upwards of Ksh 3 million.
Another of Uhuru's chronometer, Patek Philippe Aquanaut, that will set you back Kshs 3 million if you want one for yourself.
During the requiem mass of US-based Kenyan scholar Calestous Juma at the Holy Family Basilica in 2018, Uhuru was photographed rocking a Cartier Santos 100 carbon watch that goes for over Ksh 700,000.
Uhuru is also said to own a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust that belongs to the same lineage as the first waterproof wristwatch in the world and is estimated to retail for more than Ksh 500,000.
