Five Family Members Killed After Matatu Swept by Flash Floods

A family is in mourning following an unfortunate accident that led to the death of five of its members.

The five were killed after the matatu they were travelling in was swept away by flash floods at Ngatataek area of Kajiado County, Citizen Digital reported.

The accident is reported to have occurred on the morning of Monday, November 25 with the victims; two adults and three children heading from Namanga to Bisil in Kajiado.

Confirming the incident, area police commander Daudi Loronyokwe urged for caution on the roads in the rainy season.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Kajiado County Referral Hospital.

As many parts of the country experience heavy rainfall, the Kenya Meteorological Department warned of heavy rain throughout next week, with up to 30mm raising fears of more devastating effects in various parts of the country.

According to a notice issued by the weatherman, regions likely to be affected include Western, South Eastern, Northwestern, Northeastern and central regions including Nairobi.

“The current heavy rains being experienced over several parts of the country are expected to continue on Sunday 24 November 2019 and 25 November. The rainfall intensities are expected to reduce from Wednesday over several parts of Kenya,” an alert from the Met department read in part.

Residents are warned to be on the lookout for potential floods, as well as avoiding driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

Over the weekend, tragedy struck in West Pokot after a landslide buried tens of people alive.

The death toll as at Monday, November 25, was confirmed to be 52 as six more bodies were recovered at Parua area.

West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo stated that 22 people were still missing.
