Three Arrested as Police Foil Attack on British Military Base in Nanyuki

Three people were arrested by police in Nanyuki on Monday, January 6, as they allegedly attempted to force their way into a British military base.

Authorities disclosed that the trio was hauled into interrogation where they are being questioned over their motives.

Officers were tipped off after the three were spotted near the camp seemingly trying to make their way in.

The three individuals were unarmed but police insisted that their motives were malicious.

They refused to rule out terrorism, with the incident coming only a day after suspected Al-Shabaab militants stormed a naval base shared by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and US Marines in Manda Bay, Lamu County.

Rift Valley police commander Marcus Ocholla disclosed that they believed the trio had sent out an advance surveillance team before trying to breach the camp.

He further revealed that the individuals had been handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) who would undertake thorough investigations.

"We cannot give more details at the moment but the issue is being handled by the anti-terror unit. The suspects have been subjected to thorough interrogation to establish what their plans were.

"We cannot rule out terrorism. Why would people try to gain entry to an international camp?" Ocholla posed to the press.

The Sunday attack in Lamu left an American serviceman and two US Department of Defence (DoD) contractors dead as well as several aircrafts damaged. Four of the attackers were reported killed.
