Miguna Reaches Out to Matiang'i in Late-Night Call

Self-proclaimed National Resistance Movement (NRM) leader Miguna Miguna through his lawyer John Khaminwa reached out to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i after being barred from two different flights to Nairobi on Tuesday.

Khaminwa revealed to Kenyans.co.ke that he had a conversation with Matiang'i on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. According to Khaminwa, the CS seemed to be in the dark about the supposed 'red alert' issued against Miguna.

"You can quote me on this, I spoke to Interior CS Matiang'i last night, he told me the attorney general had advised that Miguna be allowed to travel. The director of immigration had also directed the same.

"Matiang'i seemed to be in the dark. I'm trying to establish whether the problem is arising from outside the country or inside," Khaminwa told this writer.

Khaminwa went on to lambast Lufthansa and Air France for refusing to let Miguna board their flights, terming their actions a gross violation of international human rights.

The lawyer vowed to urgently file a petition against them in Kenya as he dismissed the airlines' assertion that their hands were tied.

"What Lufthansa and Air France did is actionable and we are likely to take them to a court of law in Kenya. I am working on a petition and we will file it this week.

"The perception the airlines are giving the public is that Miguna is an international criminal, and they are tarnishing his name and we intend to proceed against them. Under the international human rights norms that is unacceptable, they got money from Miguna," he argued.

Disclosing he had a masters degree in public international law from New York University, Khaminwa maintained that the only way the airlines could exonerate themselves was by flying Miguna back to Kenya. He argued that the airlines should have flown Miguna to JKIA and let Kenyan officials take up the matter from there.

Miguna booked another flight that was to leave Paris, France for Nairobi after failing to board one from Frankfurt, Germany and was already in his seat before being ejected.

"Air France removed me from Flight AF0814 from Charles De Gaulle Airport to JKIA, which was about to take off. Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga are so afraid, cowardly, tyrannical and weak that they have sent red alerts to all airlines. We shall never surrender!" a furious Miguna raged.

The courts have issued several orders on different dates since 2018, compelling the government to return Miguna's passport and facilitate his re-entry into Kenya.
