I Can't Provide for My Family - Sonko Confesses as Govt Freezes 9 Accounts

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday, January 8, filed court documents declaring that a move by the Assets Recovery Agency freezing his bank account had rendered him unable to provide for his family.

Reported first by Citizen Digital, the county head, through his lawyer, Harrison Kinyanjui, faulted the move by the agency stating that it was acting on a non-existing order.

To illustrate his financial quagmire, Sonko revealed that he couldn't even receive his salary as the governor.

“Having not been extended beyond the 14 days initially granted in December 2019, the said orders is a nullity and cannot be legally enforced having lapsed and ought to be vacated.

“The Assets Recovery Agency is thus relying upon a non-existing and lapsed order to unlawfully invade and freeze the applicant’s bank accounts in breach of the constitution," the court read court papers.

On December 11, Magistrate E. Riany issued an exparte order freezing his accounts in nine banks at the request of the Assets Recovery Agency.

The embattled governor was arraigned in court in December and is facing Ksh357 million theft at City Hall.

He was released on a bail of KSh30 million bond, surety of a similar amount or a cash bail of Sh15 million. He was also been barred from accessing county offices.

On Monday, January 6, he pulled a surprise move where he announced Ann Kananu Mwenda the Nairobi Chief Officer of disaster management as his deputy governor nominee.
