Legislators from Western Kenya on Saturday, January 25, tore into President Uhuru Kenyatta, over what they termed as broken promises.
Speaking at Nabongo Grounds in Mumias Town, Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama claimed that the president only favoured his own backyard, Central Kenya, and Raila Odinga's Kisumu County, in terms of launching development projects.
"Uhuru has directed Treasury to give Ksh3 billion for coffee, Ksh2 billion for tea and Ksh3 billion to milk farmers in Central and Ksh3 billion for the Port of Kisumu. When it came to Western, he said he was waiting for a report," the legislator alleged.
The group of leaders finally managed to hold their meeting on Saturday after it had been outlawed by the police the previous weekend, due to the Building Bridges Initiative forum that was held on the same day at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
The MP was in the company of colleagues Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), Justus Murunga (Matungu), John Waluke (Sirisia), Malulu Injendi (Malava), former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa and ex-Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale during the meeting that was dubbed Western Leaders and Farmers Consultative Meeting.
Comprising mainly of legislators allied to the ruling Jubilee Party, the group expressed its disappointment in the president, by whom the MPs felt betrayed.
They went on to claim that despite campaigning for Uhuru in one of Raila Odinga's strongholds, the head of state had completely turned his back on them after he assumed office.
Following the forum, the leaders announced that they would be sending a list of demands to the president to try and kickstart projects in their county.
"We have nine resolutions that we will forward to President Uhuru so that he can fulfill just as he did after the Sagana meeting. The government should revive all companies in Western Kenya to empower our people," Barasa announced.
