Kenyans rushed to the scene of a grisly accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a BMW car to rescue victims of the two vehicles which were involved in a head-on collision

The accident, which happened along the Northern Bypass Nairobi, disrupted traffic on Thursday morning, March 5.

In the video shared on Facebook, a conductor of another matatu joined the rescue mission and could be seen breaking the driver's door to create a passage for those stuck in the Mataara Sacco vehicle.

Others who stood on top of the matatu tried to force open windows to create more room as motorists and onlookers assembled at the scene.

Passengers rescued from the matatu could also be seen limping after being injured in the accident.

The wrecked BMW lay about nine metres away from the matatu, with its bonnet damaged.

The passers-by were also spotted trying to break into it to rescue its occupants.

By the time of publishing, no deaths had been reported.

In December 2019, a report by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) stated that 3,409 people had died on road related accidents in 2019.

According to NTSA the number of crashes due to walking or standing on the road jumped by 100 percent to 40 cases between January and October in 2019.

A 2018 annual crime report by the Kenya National Police Service attributed accidents to speeding, drunk driving, fatigue and wrong use of the road by pedestrians.

Other factors were poor roads infrastructure and non-observance of traffic laws.
