A family is mourning the death of a mother and her two kids who were buried alive after night-time tragedy struck their village.
The three met their deaths after their house located in Kimaiga Village in Suna Central, Migori County, collapsed while they were asleep.
Confirming the incident, area Chief Caleb Ombura noted that the incident occurred on the morning of Monday, April 20, following the heavy rains experienced across parts of the country.
One child was rescued in the incident as the bodies of the woman, Benter Akinyi, and two children, Sara Apondi, 8, and Jerry Kennedy, four months, were retrieved from the rubble.
Her husband, Evans Otieno, disclosed that he received a call while on his nightly guard duties that his house had caved in.
“I was leaving work, heading home when I got the call,” Otieno is quoted in The Standard.
A co-wife to the deceased, Margret Achieng, disclosed that she had spotted Akinyi harvesting water at around 5 a.m. before she woke up an hour later to find the house caved in.
The family is now pleading with Migori County Government to allow them to travel to their home county of Homa Bay for the burial of the three.
“We are from Kagan village in Homa Bay and we ask the County Government of Migori to help us transport the bodies for burial at home,” begged Apolo Tabu, a brother-in-law to Akinyi.
This came as heavy rains wreaked havoc in different parts of the country with the hardest-hit region being West-Pokot County.
At least four people were confirmed dead, among them a police officer, and several others missing after heavy rains triggered mud-slides at the Elgeyo Marakwet - West Pokot border.
While the worst-hit counties so far are Narok, Elgeyo Marakwet, and West Pokot, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans in several counties to brace themselves for heavy rains.
