Water Harvesting Authority acting CEO Geoffrey Sang was on Tuesday, Apil 28, fired for his alleged involvement in the Ksh231 million Nakuetum Peace Dam scandal.
Sang was arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) detectives on Friday, April 24, and is facing corruption charges.
His firing was announced following a Zoom meeting overseen by board chairman Erick Okeyo who noted that the board made a unanimous resolution to revoke Sang’s appointment.
He was replaced by Sharon Obonyo, the authority’s Chief Legal Affairs Officer, who takes over in an acting capacity.
“We sought the permission of the Cabinet Secretary and were allowed to hold a special meeting which resolved that his appointment be revoked. We have appointed an acting CEO for now,” stated Okeyo.
An official internal memo communicated Obonyo's appointment to the rest of the staff at the authority.
“Please accord her support in the discharge of her new duties,” read part of the memo.
The agency is under the Water, Sanitation and Irrigation docket headed by CS Sicily Kariuki.
It was established on April 21, 2017, after the Water Act No. 43 of 2016 came into effect.
It oversees the construction of dams and storage of water in Kenya, the development of National Public Water Works for Water Resources Storage and flood control.
It also collects and provides information for the formulation by the Cabinet Secretary on national water resources storage and flood control strategies, develops a water harvesting policy and enforces water harvesting strategies.
