Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o has listed strict demands to President Uhuru Kenyatta while insisting that he would not open restaurants in Kisumu County.

Nyong'o, while addressing the media in Kisumu on Tuesday, May 5, argued that the county's condition was severe and opening eateries would jeopardise the health of his residents.

The Orange Democratic Movement governor lamented that his efforts to have the Ministry of Health provide enough protection kits for restaurant employees were futile.

"We will not open the restaurants because we do not have personal protective equipment. MoH said that restaurants should be opened but they do not provide enough testing kits too.

"We are taking this measure because we are compassionate about health. Let me assure that we are working closely with the government on surveillance," Nyong'o stated.

On Saturday, April 25, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the re-opening of restaurants, while directing them to observe strict protocols stipulated by MoH.

"One immediate step from the work done so far is that we will allow a few restaurants and eateries that show the highest levels of health regulation compliance, and the ability to arrange for employee testing, to undertake minimal operations while maintaining measures that mitigate against the spread of the coronavirus," Kenyatta announced.

He further warned that he would shut them down if found flouting measures set to curb Covid-19 spread.

On Tuesday, May 5, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe raised an alarm on Kenyans flouting rules and also warned of dire consequences, after individuals were caught buying two beers and one sausage in restaurants.

“It is unfortunate that some are going to hotels to order two sausages and two beers. Then they will go to another eatery and order another sausage plus two more bottles.

“The same person will go to another restaurant and order an orange as dessert…and add another beer. Honestly, what are we doing?" Kagwe wondered.
