Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i ordered Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to launch an investigation into an incident where police officers were, on Saturday, May 23, accused of robbing and assaulting a civilian in Kahawa West, Nairobi.
Speaking with K24 Tv's Anne Kiguta on Sunday, May 31, State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita disclosed that the CS had detailed his directive in a daily briefing.
Maina was reportedly robbed and assaulted by two police officers after he was found walking outside his home during 'curfew hours'. He was later chased away from Kahawa West Police Station after he pleaded with the police to allow him to record a statement.
"I spoke with Interior CS and he was categorical in the case of Samuel Maina. He directed IG Mutyambai to investigate the matter and to give him a report at the end of the week," Nzioka stated.
The Chief of Staff was responding to a question posed to him over the rate of police brutality since the dusk to dawn curfew was imposed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in March 2020.
"Our police have done an exceptional job. They have worked overtime and at odd hours, have supervised curfew, they are managing our borders where we are facing issues with our neighbouring countries.
"I wouldn't take one or two incidences as being representative of the response of our security services. They have safeguarded our country," Nzioka argued.
However, he argued that he was not defending rogue police who went out of their limits to injure Kenyans by misusing their powers.
"We haven't been reluctant on the police initiating investigations on misconduct. However, we have over 100, 000 police on the ground and over 47 million Kenyans, such incidences will occur from time to time.
"In fairness, we have seen police investigate such incidences which come to light and be news. Every day millions of people go home and obey curfew directives. When such minor incidences occur, it is obvious that they will get attention," Nzioka stated.
