Treasury CS Ukur Yattani is expected to present the 2020/21 budget to Parliament on Thursday, June 11.
Kenyans.co.ke has learned that Education CS George Magoha will be taking the lion’s share of the budget with a Ksh504 billion allocation.
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i was allocated Ksh131.6 billion, Treasury was given Ksh116.9 billion while the Health CS Mutahi Kagwe was allocated Ksh111.7 billion.
Magoha’s allocation of Ksh504 billion overshadows his colleagues which totals Ksh364.6 billion.
The State Department of University Education is expected to get Ksh113.3 billion while the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education will get Ksh100.8 billion.
Surprisingly, the bulk of the Education budget will go into recurrent expenditure and only Ksh24 billion will be used for development.
The Teachers Service Commission will get the biggest share of Magoha’s budget, Ksh266 billion, which is an upgrade from Ksh241 billion allocated for the current financial year.
The commission which is an independent institution will hire 5,000 secondary school instructors, while the government seeks to recruit 4,920 primary school teachers.
A further breakdown of Magoha’s budget revealed that primary school teachers were allocated Ksh165.5 billion, secondary school teachers Ksh87.5 billion and tertiary level lecturers Ksh3.6 billion.
The budget allocated to the Ministry of Education demonstrates the priority President Uhuru Kenyatta has given Magoha’s docket.
The Ministry of Transport Infrastructure came second with an allocation of Ksh189.5 billion.
Of the country’s Ksh2.7 trillion budget, Ksh349.7 will be financed through foreign debt Ksh473.6 billion using local debt.
