Police in Voi have arrested a man for allegedly impersonating Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho's Personal Assitant and defrauding the public.

The man was arrested in Voi, Taita-Taveta County after a number of complaints from residents who had lost thousands of shillings after trusting him.

A police statement on Saturday, July 25, confirmed his arrest and revealed some of the members of the public that he had conned.

"This afternoon we wish to inform the public of an arrest of a suspect by the name [WITHHELD], that was effected on Wednesday, July 22, at 6:40p.m.

"This is after numerous complaints by members of the public of defrauding them off their money, while purporting to be a Public Officer and a personal assistant to Karanja Kibicho Interior Principal Secretary," read the statement in part.

He was accused of obtaining Ksh150,000 from a man, promising to process a firearm licence for him within five days.

The suspect is also said to have defrauded another man of Ksh150,000 with the promise of securing a job for his son in the Kenya Defence Forces.

A third man accuses him of conning him Ksh100,000, money he says he paid to ensure he was hired at the Mwingi North Sub-County Commissioner's office.

The police urged members of the public who may have been duped to come forward and lodge their complaints.

There has been a rise in cases in which members of the public impersonate government officials to defraud them.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya on Wednesday, May 20, exposed an imposter tricking unsuspecting residents into paying a small fee to facilitate the processing of motorcycle donations from the governor.

On Thursday July 23, Senior Superintendent of Police Isaac Thuranira Muriuki lifted the lid on a trick police imposters were using to scam Kenyans.
