Kongowea ward MCA Abrary Mohammed Omar on Thursday, August 8, accused Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho of sending goons to rough up his brothers as well as destroy his businesses.

Abrary, who was among four MCAs who had forwaded documents to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) indicating that Joho's administration channelled taxpayer funds to non-existent projects, indicated that his brothers had been beaten up due to a political dispute.

"I want to tell governor Joho that justice will be served. I can't believe that you sent two lorries and six inspectorate vehicles to my home," he expressed.

"You beat up my brothers just because of politics? You send people to destroy my businesses just because of politics," he posed.

Athman indicated that he was not moved by the actions and added that he was ready to die for the truth.

Kenyans.co.ke could not independently verify the claims as calls to the Mombasa County government, went unaswered.

The MCA alongside three of his counterparts, Charles Kitula (Freretown), Fahad Kassim (Mjambere), Robert Nyiro (Bamburi), Athman Shebe (Jomvu Kuu), had stated that their efforts to see how money was being used were futile.

“We have made the best efforts to have the expenditure explained by county authorities but they failed to give satisfactory responses,” reads the report filed at the commission.

The MCAs also tasked the commission with asking the county government to give dates of payment as well as sites of the projects.

In addition, they wanted the county to provide their bills of quantity and payment certificates.

“We do not have faith in the Assembly Finance Committee, which has been the source of these problems. Matters are being done differently in this county,” an excerpt of their letter reads.

On July 25, 2020, the County Assembly Finance Committee chairman Mohammed Hatimy termed claims by the MCAs as 'unfounded'

“These people do not know how the budget is made. All they are citing is in the plan. The exact amount to be spent on those projects will be shown by the bill of quantity,” he stated.
