Those injured in the grisly road accident were rushed to medical facilities in the area including Webuye Sub County Hospital for emergency treatment while the bodies of the deceased were ferried to Webuye sub-county hospital mortuary.

The section of the road has been marked as a black spot with a number of accidents witnessed at the interchange over the years.

The interchange is the only access to Kakamega from the busy Webuye-Eldoret highway with numerous motorists complaining about the narrow road.

Most of the casualties from the accident were women who were selling fruits and vegetables on the roadside and had little time to react when the lorry lost control.

A bodaboda rider was also involved in the accident as the lorry hit him before ramming into the matatu that was stationary on the roadside.

Reports indicate that up to 14 people were left nursing injuries after the accident and were rushed to hospital with the exact number of those in critical condition still scanty.

According to a number of sources the death toll rose to 10 but official police reports who were at the scene of the accident revealed seven casualties.

This comes a day after National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) raised a alarm over the increased number of road accidents.
