3-year Old Girl Shot Dead by Police During Riot

A 3-year old girl was on Saturday, November 7, shot dead by a stray bullet by a police officer who was trying to control a crowd in Nairobi.

The incident occurred in the Githurai 45 area as residents were trying to lynch three suspected motorcycle thieves.

The police officers shot in the air in a bid to disperse the crowds and that is when a stray bullet hit and killed the baby.

The mother of the baby identified as, Pauline, who spoke to journalists at the police station called for justice to be carried out.

"I was carrying her on my back and I had gone to see what the commotion was about and that is when I felt that she had been shot," she stated still dressed in the leso with her baby's blood.

The distraught mother broke down as she recalled her loss in the morning incident. 

The officer who allegedly fired the shot has been arrested even as investigations continue. His gun was taken for ballistic investigations.

The body of the baby has been moved to Kenyatta University morgue.

The three suspects who were about to be lynched by the mob are also in police custody.
