BBI Secretariat co-chair Junet Mohammed on Wednesday, December 2, responded to the proposals made by DP William Ruto and his allies over the referendum process.

The Suna East MP in an interview stated that their views were time-barred as the signature collection process was already underway and they had accumulated 4 million signatures in support of the initiative.

"We are just finalising the process before we take the signatures to IEBC for verification.

"What the DP is proposing is already outdated because we have already passed that stage. We had two years to get views from all Kenyans; where was he? Does he mean that everything has been done behind his back?” Mohammed posed.

The legislator further dared the DP to declare his position on the BBI report rather than push for a consensus.

During his address, the Ruto did not give a decisive position instead, calling for a consensus.

Speaking from his Karen residence during a highly anticipated speech, the DP did not give a firm stance on whether he would support the yes or no option in the referendum process.

He supported part of the BBI proposals while expressed his reservations on others.

"I am aware that many people want us to take a position on the BBI, and I want to tell you that where we are now is a point that requires a lot of thinking and consultation so that we can be able to engage with the rest of the process in a way that is informed," the DP stated.

Ruto and his allies further called for the referendum to be pushed to 2022 and held alongside the General Election to cut costs.

"The referendum question can be included in the general election as the 7th question. We recommend that we have the referendum at the general elections and this will be at no extra cost for the IEBC," he added.
