The Mombasa County Government has adopted the use of drones to fumigate streets and public spaces during the festive season.

The county is anticipating thousands of both local and international tourists ahead of Christmas and New Year festivities.

The plan targets areas having a high number of people passing by such as parks, bus terminals and public beaches.

The fumigation plan is set to begin at Mama Ngina Waterfront on Tuesday, December 22 from 10 p.m and will last for several days.

Mombasa County Communications Director Richard Chacha revealed that the move is a precautionary measure with a high number of visitors expected.

"People are arriving in Mombasa from different parts of the country and the world for the holidays. We cannot take chances," he told Nation.

Mombasa had previously installed spray booths in various locations around the City back in April to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The fumigation is a measure to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 with Mombasa being one of the counties reporting a high number of positive cases.

Despite Covid-19 ravaging the economy, some airlines are having full booking, days ahead of Christmas leading to an increase in ticket prices.

A Nairobi-Mombasa flight in one of the carriers on December 23 will go for a high of Ksh14,100 and a low of Ksh10,000 with the Christmas Eve attracting the highest fares of Ksh16,100 for a one-way ticket.

Mombasa has stepped up its efforts to enforce Covid-19 prevention and control measures as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in conjunction with the police have conducted a number of crackdowns.

Most of the vehicles that were impounded and drivers arrested was due to failure to comply with Covid-19 guidelines.
