President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday, January 9, dismissed a leaked letter written by Murang'a senator Irungu Kang'ata.
The president alluded to the letter during the burial of ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi's mother, Mama Hannah Atsianzale, saying that he was in charge of the government.
The head of state was responding to calls by earlier speakers such as Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Chairman Francis Atwoli and Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala who had asked the president to crack the whip by pushing out rebellious members of Jubilee party.
"Brother Atwoli na wewe senator Malala, msione simba amenyeshewa muone ni paka, kila kitu na wakati wake. Sisi ni wanademokrasia. Watu wapige pige ile wanataka kupiga, waandike ile mabarua wanataka kuandika, I am in charge of this government and I am in control of what we are doing.
"Don't assume that a lion that has been rained on is a cat. Some people have written letters to me thinking that I don't know what I am doing. I don't want to be lectured. I am the President and I am in charge of this government. I know where I am and I know where I am going."
In the letter dated December 30, 2020, Kang'ata stated that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) was bound to fail in the Mount Kenya region following a survey conducted by his office.
Kang'ata told President Kenyatta that the provincial administration's role in the BBI process was contributing to its unpopularity.
"Staki mtu wa kunilecture mimi. I know where I am and I am very clear about where I am going," he stated.
While delivering his speech, Atwoli had argued that Deputy President William Ruto was working against Kenyatta's ambitions and leading a campaign opposing the president's agenda.
"I voted for your father (Mzee Jomo Kenyatta - Kenya's first President) in 1969 and he was a strict leader. I want you to come out and be serious like him. Your deputy is opposing two projects, BBI and Big 4 Agenda yet he claims to be your assistant.
"We are supporting you yet you can't come out and defend your lieutenants. Even Peter Kenneth (former Gatanga MP) has been labeled an outcast in his own region (Mt Kenya) just because he is your ally," Atwoli lamented.
