New Opinion Poll Reveals BBI Unpopularity

According to a new report released by Emerging Leaders Foundation (ELF) Africa, only 30 percent of the youth would vote for the BBI if a referendum was called today.

The poll revealed that 70 percent of the youth would oppose BBI, and that only 30 percent would support it.

Of the 70 percent youth population that was sampled, 40 percent were male and 30 percent were female. The 30 percent population that voted in favour of the initiative included 21 percent male and 9 percent female.

A breakdown of the women demographic revealed that 16 percent of women aged between 26-35 years would not vote for BBI, while only 4 percent of women in the same age bracket would support the initiative.

10 percent of women aged between 22-25 years would not vote for BBI while only 3 percent of women in the same age bracket would vote for the initiative. In the 19-21 age bracket, only 4 percent would not vote for the initiative with 0 percent voting in favour of it.

An analysis of the male demographic revealed that 27 percent of men aged between 26-35 would not vote for the Initiate and that only 18 percent of men in the same age bracket would vote in favour of it. In the 22-25 age bracket, 13 percent of men would not vote for the initiative and only 3 percent would vote in favour of it.

70 percent of Kenyan youth also revealed that they did not give their views to the BBI Steering Taskforce Committee which was collecting views across the country. 30 percent of the youth however admitted that they gave their views to the committee.

When it came to the question of whether the youth had read the BBI report, 50 percent of them admitted that they had read it, 38 percent admitted to reading only few sections while 12 percent admitted that they had not read the report at all.

54 percent of the youth first saw the BBI report on WhatsApp, 18 percent saw it through twitter,10 percent on hard copy, 4 percent on e-mail, 5 percent on Facebook while 10 percent of the youth admitted they had not seen the report at all.

31 percent of the youth voted that the proposed creation of a youth commission was of little impact. 24 percent also voted that the four year grace period before repaying HELB  was of little impact.

The youth admitted that they liked the proposed tax holiday, abolishment of women representative position, abolition of sitting allowance for public servants, the four year grace period for HELB beneficiaries, ward development fund, 5 percent reward for whistle blowers of corruption and increase of National to County sharing of revenue to 35 percent.
