Men of cloth all over the world are known for preaching about love, forgiveness and repentance.
However, Kenyans have in recent years witnessed the men they trust to lead them to in the righteous way commit unimaginably heinous crimes. Kenyans.co.ke compiled a list of some of the crimes committed by the men of cloth.
Jogoo Road Murders
The bodies of a seminarian, a female civil servant and her son were found lying lifeless in a house at the government quarters along Jogoo Road Nairobi on February 23, 2021.
Police investigations have showed that the seminarian, Kelvin Kipkoech, killed the government official, Charity Cherop, and her son Allan Kipng’etich before he committed suicide.
An autopsy conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor on February 27, at the Chiromo Mortuary revealed that Kelvin died a day after the mother and son had died.
The autopsy revealed that the mother and son had died of suffocation. The minor also suffered injuries on his face and neck. It also revealed that the injuries were consistent with the struggle during the attempt to suffocate him.
The seminarian, who suffered minor injuries on his hands and stomach, was confirmed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning which could have happened by exposing himself to a jiko.
3G Ministries
In January 2020, Pastor Elisha Misiko of the Grounds for God’s Gospel Ministries commonly known as 3G stood up during a church service and walked towards his wife of twenty years to stab her. The pastor stabbed his wife and then stabbed himself three times in the stomach before he slit his throat.
The pastor in a suicide note that he left behind, claimed that his wife had changed ownership of the church to her name, stolen his children and land.
Makueni Priest
Another case is that of Father (Fr) John Wambua Makewa , former Makueni Parish father-in-charge.
He was sentenced to seven years in prison in June 2012 on the charges of shooting his colleague, Fr Fidelis Nzuki who was at the time an assistant priest at the Makueni Catholic Parish.
Nzuki had arrived from Nairobi on the day of the incident. He caught up with his friends including Makewa before he retired to bed. He would later on be woken up by gunshots. Police records indicate that Nzuki called a colleague identified as Father Kioko and the two huddled against the wall.
Makewa entered the room ten minutes later with a shotgun in hand and informed the two that there were thieves outside. The two followed their boss into his bedroom where he handed Nzuki a pistol and three bullets which he was to use.
Nzuki was then asked by the senior priest to open the door but as soon as he reached for the door Makewa shot him. When appearing before a retrial court in February 2015, Fr Makewa insisted that he had not shot his colleague.
Father Waqo
In July 2005, Bishop Luigi Locati of Isiolo was shot in the head and neck by a group of men on his way back home. The Bishop died an hour later. Police investigations would later on point to Father Waqo Guyo. The priest was sentenced to death for the murder of the bishop. The judge ruled that the priest planned, financed and facilitated the acquisition of the gun.
These are some of the cases where the men of cloth have committed a sin which they had previously preached against.
