Residents of Pesi village, Laikipia West, woke up to a shock on Sunday, March 28, after a fire broke out in one of their neighbor's houses at around 4 am.
The morning inferno killed a man, his wife, and their 4-year-old child who was asleep.
Some of the neighbors rushed to their rescue and attempted to put out the fire using water cans, but the fire had grown much bigger due to the strong winds.
"We heard a blast from their house and rushed to the scene only to find a huge fire. They were crying out for help but we could not save them," Samuel Githinji said.
The residents managed to put out the fire after a few hours when the fire had already consumed the three family members.
"We tried everything to save their lives, but we could not manage. They went silent after some time. The bodies were retrieved after we put out the fire," Githinji added.
A fire engine from Nyahururu arrived at the scene much later, after the residents had put out the fire.
The fire is also reported to have destroyed properties.
Laikipia Senator John Kinyua who lives in the area sent his condolences and pledged to support the family of the deceased.
Laikipia West Sub-County police commander Katobu Molu told The Standard that they are investigating the matter.
"We are still investigating the incident and suspect the fire may have been caused by an electric fault, but we are yet to confirm," he said.
The bodies were moved to the Nyahururu county referral hospital mortuary.
