Two people lost their lives and several others injured during a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) campaign rally held in Bonchari constituency on Monday, March 29.

Police stated that a Toyota Probox rammed into a vehicle that was part of UDA Bonchari candidate Teresa Oyioka's convoy.

A man and woman who were in the Probox, succumbed to their injuries as they were being rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

According to eyewitness the Probox was overtaking the convoy which was on the campaign trail causing the accident.

South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro confirmed that the UDA candidate, Teresa oyioka, was not hurt since she was in a different vehicle.

The Bonchari seat was left vacant following the death of the former Member of Parliament John Oyoo Oyioka on Monday, February 15, after a long illness.

The Bonchari by-election which is to be held on Tuesday, May 18, has attracted at least 13 candidates.

Oyioka, the widow of late area MP Oroo Oyioka, was among the 8 candidates cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest the seat.

The former Energy and Petroleum Regulatory and Authority (EPRA) boss, Parvel Oimeke, recently resigned to join the race on an ODM ticket. 

"I Pavel Robert Oimeke, would like to announce my resignation from the position of director-general at the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory and Authority," he stated in a letter he sent to the Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter.

Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju unveiled former Bonchari Member of Parliament Zebedeo Opore as the party’s choice in the by-election. 

Other aspirants include; former Woman Rep Mary Otara (United Green Movement), Mary Nyabuto (Maendeleo Chap Chap) and Nyakeiyo Oigo (National Reconstruction Alliance), Kevin Mosomi (Party of Democratic Unity) Jona Onkendi (The New Democrats) and Victor Omanwa (Party of Economic Development) among others.
