The officer was on his routine morning run to keep fit when unknown attackers shot him on the leg shoulder and head. He died on the spot," read the statement in part.

The police authority further vowed to deliver justice for the slain officer and promised to carry out thorough investigations.

"We condemn this heinous act with the strongest words possible. No stone will be left unturned until we get the killers of the Civil Servant. Among other duties.

"NPS remains committed to protecting life and property of people living in Kenya," continued the statement.

Speaking to the press, area Assistant County Commissioner Kennedy Omollo noted that the assailants must have been highly skilled individuals and they had prior knowledge of the officer.

“Why would the assailant shoot him and collect the spent cartridges at the scene?” he question.

The officers who surveyed the scene concluded that the assailants must have been two judging by the number of footprints found at the scene of the crime.

The body of the officer was spotted by a motorist along the highway before it was  taken to Lodwar County Referral Hospital mortuary.

The report broke moments after Inspect General of Police Hilary Mutyambai directed the Gender and Children's directorate to probe harassment in the police force.

The directive came after a female office went viral with a video narrating her frustrations in the force.

In the video, the police officer indicated that she had written numerous resignation letters but they were yet to reach the IG.

"Sir, kindly allow me to resign from the police office because I can thrive elsewhere. Even if it means, resigning without pay, I will not mind," she said.
