Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has been re-elected for a record fourth time as a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO) governing body in Geneva, Switzerland.

This happened during the 109th Virtual session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) held in Geneva on Monday, June 14.

The ILO is a United Nations agency that is aimed at internationally recognizing human and labour rights as well as advocating for fair working conditions that aid in helping people prosper and progress in their business environment.

"Dr. Atwoli, who was among the candidates that received the highest number of votes globally, will now be charged with the responsibility of representing the interests of working men and women on the African Continent for the four-year period 2021-2024 on this important main decision making body of the ILO as far as the world of work is concerned," read part of the statement released by COTU executive board.

The board also acknowledged the tremendous feat achieved by Atwoli in becoming the first member of the ILO Governing Body to be re-elected for a record four times.

"This is a strong attestation of the confidence that trade union leaders, in the entire continent of Africa as well as globally continue to have in Dr Atwoli's leadership," the statement read.

Alwoli was first elected as ILO member in 2018 after he was unanimously supported by over 5,000 delegates who were in attendance at the conference.

After the immense show of support, the COTU boss promised to remain true to the calling and advocate for social justice and favourable rights for all.

The news comes as Atwoli was also re-elected as COTU boss for the fifth term.

"Through my election, I commit to always champion for the rights of workers and I will not be cowed. I promise to serve you with all my might and strength and not betray the trust you have bestowed in me,” he stated after the re-election.

Atwoli took over the position in 2001, marking a record 20-year reign at the organization. He has been synonymous with advocating for workers' rights and welfare.
