Standard Media's Strategy and Content Editor Peter Opondo was on Friday, July 16, relieved off his duties.

In a whatsapp message, Opondo told his colleagues that his contract had been terminated over what was described as "unsatisfactory performance".

"Some personal news. My short stint with Standard Media Group has come to an end today. The company has terminated my contract effective immediately," Opondo stated.

He added that he did not agree with the conclusion the company had come to but had accepted the decision.

"Sometimes we don't always see things the same way and some things are just meant to be. So I wish all of you well as you continue with the transformation journey," he added.

Sources privy to the matter told Kenyans.co.ke that Opondo was allegedly a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto and organised his interviews at KTN News, which irked the management.

Opondo joined the station in February 2021 when the company made changes in the Company.

The media boss was in charge of editorial content in all the Standard Group's broadcast properties.

Before his stint at the Standard, Opondo had worked for Mediamax Network Limited as the Head of TV and Digital.

He, however, resigned when journalists at the station were subjected to a 50 percent salary cut.

Opondo, who has over 18 years experience in broadcast, print and digital media, also previously worked at the Royal Media Services (RMS) as the Editorial Director.

Interestingly, Opondo has worked for all major media houses in the Country.
