Police are holding a 40-year old man suspected of masterminding the killing of four men in Kajiado's Kitengela area.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), on Tuesday, August 17, stated that it had arrested the prime suspect behind the controversial lynching of the four.

WHAT WE KNOW: Two brothers and two cousins had visited a relative for a housewarming party in Kitengela.

They were lynched in Enkamulyat area in Kisaju, Kajiado North.

Through its Twitter account, the DCI announced that Benson Melonyie ole Mungai, 40, was arrested by detectives in a covert operation on Monday, August 16. The investigation agency claims that Mungai masterminded the killings of the four for reasons better known to himself.

Two brothers Fred Mureithi, 30, and Victor Mwangi, 25, their friends Mike George, 29, and Nicholas Musa, 28, were lynched by a mob after they were allegedly mistaken for cattle rustlers.

Mungai, according to the DCI, was flushed out of his hideout after he went into hiding immediately after the death of the four men on Sunday, August 8.

“His arrest comes a few days after DCI took over investigations into the murders and moved with speed to pursue the killers," stated the DCI.

“Ole Mungai was positively linked into the brutal killings after forensic investigations placed him at the scene of the crime, where it was established that he led and coordinated the killing of the four.”

Mungai is currently helping police with investigations as they piece together evidence to establish circumstances that led to the brutal murders.

The law enforcement agency further notes that a manhunt has been intensified to capture the other suspects. Police are also in pursuit of a politician said to have fired in the air to disperse the mob that was lynching the four men.

The said licensed gun-holder is wanted for interrogation to ascertain how he arrived at the scene and why he fired 14 times in the air.

“We are aware of the local community's attempts to subvert justice. The statements already recorded indicate a well-orchestrated scheme to subvert justice," a lead detective stated, noting that locals had attempted to bungle the case.

A group of bikers, friends and relatives held demonstrations outside Kitengela Police Station demanding for the arrest of the perpetrators and speedy conclusion into the gruesome murders.
