Police officers cornered and gunned down thugs who had ambushed and terrorized residents in Muthaiga and Spring Valley estates.
Two suspected gangsters were killed during the Monday, August 17, incident when they opened fire after the police asked them to surrender.
Officers told journalists that the gangsters have been raiding Nairobi estates and getting away with expensive household items, particularly electronics.
Confirming the incident to Kenyans.co.ke Starehe OCPD Julius Kiragu stated that one of the thugs managed to escape, but police are hunting him down.
"Our officers are searching for him. He is wounded and we will get him," the police boss explained, adding that they are awaiting results to confirm the identification of the two who were gunned down.
Police recovered items they believe were stolen from various people in Muthaiga and Spring Valley. Among items recovered was a laptop, TV, DVD player, 150 duplicated keys, and 11 master keys.
Officers also retrieved a firearm and several rounds of ammunition during the night incident.
This comes amid calls by members of the public to the Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai to beef up security in the city.
In June 2021, Mutyambai announced he had formed a special police unit to deal with increased muggings, murders and robbery with violence cases in Nairobi.
Mutyambai noted that the new anti-mugging squad targeted all cases, including rowdy boda boda riders.
"We have a special anti-mugging squad that handles robbery with violence incidents, including the ones that involve boda boda riders.
"We have been engaging the operators through a sensitization program dubbed Usalama Barabarani (Road safety) on abiding by the rule of law," stated the IG.
