The authorities have today, September 8 rescued a police impostor from angry residents who had tried to end his life along Nairobi's River Road.

The wannabe was rescued after people beat and threatened to end his life for wrongly arresting members of the public and extorting them.

The man had been engaging in the act along the streets and even apprehended those he found flouting Covid-19 rules and regulations.

In a statement made by witnesses, the fake cop would at times pick innocent people and still demand money from them.

Tables, however, turned on the man today after one of his victims demanded to see his work identification card, leading to a scuffle that exposed him.

“The manner in which he was manhandling members of public made one of them suspicious of him. The victim demanded a work identification card from the fake cop and that is when hell broke loose,” Karimi, a hawker along River Road said.

Immediately it turned out that he was not a policeman, members of the public descended on him with kicks and blows.

According to Jane Kerubo, an eyewitness, the man was beaten and almost burnt, had it not been for the timely intervention of the police who were on patrol.

The angry mob was so charged, the police had to fire in the air to disperse them and take away the impersonator.

The incident happened against the backdrop of many other similar cases, with the latest one having been reported a month ago in Nyeri town.

He was using a uniform belonging to his brother, who was a former policeman to disturb locals and extort them.

He pretended to be a GSU officer and went round demanding money for their freedom before he was busted and arrested.
