Interior Principal Secretary, Karanja Kibicho, has revealed plans by a section of Mt Kenya leaders to disrupt the Madaraka Day celebrations in Kirinyaga.

Speaking in Kirinyaga on Friday, October 8, the PS said that they had received intelligence that some political leaders from the region were hiring goons to cause chaos at the National celebrations that will be led by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The PS alleged that politicians from Mt Kenya were planning to ferry the goons from Embu, Murang'a and Nyeri counties.

He warned leaders that any acts of misconduct at the Madaraka Day celebrations, which will be held at the Waguru stadium, will not be tolerated.

"I have received intelligence reports that there are people who are planning to ruin Kirinyaga from Nyeri, Murang'a and Embu and we are saying we will not allow this. As a government we will not take this lightly," he stated.

The PS added that those opposed to the President should keep off the celebrations if their sole purpose is to disrupt a rather peaceful national celebration.

Although the PS steered clear on naming the individuals, he hinted that they are allies of Deputy President William Ruto.

Kibicho's warning comes amid a looming battle pitting incumbent Kirinyaga Governor Anne Mumbi Waiguru, seasoned politician Martha Karua and area Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici, all of who are seeking the county's top seat.

The Kirinyaga politics intensified after Ngirici and Kibicho buried their political differences and the latter hinted at supporting the former in the 2022 gubernatorial contest.

According to Ngirici's communications official, Justin Kinyua, PS Kibicho revealed that he will not be vying for any elective position in 2022.

Waiguru's 2017 arch-rival, Martha Karua of Narc Kenya, was elevated to the position of Mt Kenya’s Unity forum spokesperson and days later the governor announced that she might be leaving Jubilee Party for DP Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The governor disclosed in an interview that she had been approached by Presidential hopefuls who want her to be their running mate

However, the elevation of Karua may overshadow Waiguru’s possible chances since Karua is now at the centre of succession politics. Waiguru has gone ahead to plead with Karua to concentrate on regional politics and abandon her gubernatorial bid.
